Seminar Accounting Education 2018: Gamification

The Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (Ghent University) organized a workshop for teachers with the topic ‘Gamification’.  A workshop organised in cooperation with masters students. The content of the workshop is in line with the curriculum of secundary education.

During the seminar different topics are discussed. Below you can find a short explanation of each topic:

Legotruck game

This interactive game simulates target costing. The students work in teams in order to solve a product development problem. The objective is to assemble a truck in Lego and to calculate the production cost of the truck with Activity-Based Costing. Next, each group is challenged to decrease the product cost of the truck by redesigning, but taking into account the customer requirements and quality standards. The case is a unique opportunity for students to actively participate in a redesign exercise. During this seminar the teachers can experience it themselves.

Ratio-analysis

We take a closer look at the changes in the financial statements and the Belgian Chart of Accounts (since 01/01/2016) on the ratio analysis, starting from examples.

DUGA

DUGA is a mobile and educational application. Students compete against each other to gain points and badges by answering questions related to the course. The game increases the involvement in the course and could be used interdisciplinary. During the presentation the different question types, the backend and frontend are explained. Additionally, the participants are asked to experience the game themselves.
